WHAT HAPPENS?
Volunteers meet up with people who have a disability and offer friendship,
company and sometimes transport. They usually meet once per fortnight for a
few hours. Some volunteers visit people in their homes, while others meet
out in the community and do things together, like shopping, going to the
cinema or having a bite to eat.
Some volunteers prefer to meet at the monthly
LIVE
picnic where they can make
friends with people who have a disability with the support of disability workers.
This option really suits busy people who only have a few hours a month to give
and people who do not feel confident to provide one on one support just yet.
Some people who have a disability want to contribute by volunteering and
LIVE
can help them to find a volunteer role. For some, LIVE picnics are a good place
to learn about volunteering skills, while others help in office administration.
FROM ENQUIRY TO MATCHED UP!
After your initial enquiry, one of the
LIVE staff will contact you to arrange an informal
interview where we can find out more about you and vice versa. During the
interview, we ask that you provide us with 2 referees and some form of
identification in order to obtain a police check.
At the interview, LIVE staff will orient you to the basic responsibilities of volunteering with
LIVE and to the support provided for you. During the first six months of volunteering, you will be required to
participate in disability awareness training.
Once your police check comes back, the
LIVE staff will get right onto the matching up process. During this
period, there is a lot of going back and forth between people, so don't be
surprised if it takes a couple of weeks to get matched. However we try our best
to match you with someone who lives close to you, and has similar interests.
